BUTTERFLY COLLECTOR: ekphrastic writing course (night)

via zoom

Dates: 12.01.21 - 16.02.21*

Session times: Tuesdays: 19.00 - 21.00.
Content: For many centuries writers of poetry & prose have been inspired by the creative arts. Each week we will explore
writing ekphrastically, i.e. using works of art as our leaping off point. Changing art-form every session, our stimuli will
include 2D images, 3D creations, the written word, film/theatre & music.

Structure: 6 x 2 hour sessions*, involving discussion, stimuli and writing to explore the theme. In addition, each session
builds to a choice of Offline Tasks, which are voluntary but almost always undertaken.
In-session feedback: willing attendees can volunteer to share their new writing and receive friendly but constructive peer
feedback, without any pressure to do so.

Who for: novice or experienced writers of all disciplines wishing to begin, improve or experiment. NB: We are a friendly,
relaxed and safe group who are very welcoming towards new members.

Class size: up to 10 participants, aged 16+ (unless agreed with facilitator before-hand)

Price: non-refundable £90, payable when your place is booked & in advance of our first session.

NB: If a session is
missed, you will be sent class notes, resource images and the associated Offline Tasks.

Substance Creative Writing

29.01.21 - 05.03.21* : Fridays, 14.00 - 16.00

In an ideal world our homes are a safe place - warm, private and where we go to relax and be
ourselves. They are full of what we need and have collected over the years, and whether these objects are made
of wood, metal, plastic or other, they have a use, memory and connection associated with them. By focusing on
a material each week, SUBSTANCE offers writers opportunities to explore, remember and invent, whilst drawing
inspiration from a rich source they know inside out.

Who for?

novice or experienced writers of all disciplines wishing to begin, improve or experiment. Whether new
to this or a little out of practice, we are a friendly, relaxed and safe group who are very welcoming towards new

non-refundable £90, payable on confirmation of booking. NB: If a session is missed, you will be sent class notes, resources and associated offline tasks so that you don't miss out.

New Course - 2021

Cultural Ambassadors

The Cultural Ambassadors project funded by the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) in partnership with Beach Creative is now in its sixth year.

Last year, the course moved online during the first lockdown, four weeks into the 12-week course, and following the popularity of the online sessions, we have decided to try an all-online model.

The course is for over 18s and FREE, but we would hope you will be able to commit to the sessions. There will be 12 weekly sessions, supported by teaching videos and worksheets and a weekly interactive group session online to ask questions, share work and ideas and meet each other. You will not be eligible if you have already studied at degree level

Once enrolled, you will receive a pack of materials and printed worksheets to enable you to engage in all the activities, and there is will a weekly group meeting online. We do not currently have a set start date, but hope it will be ready to run in 3-4 weeks, or sooner if possible!

We will look at: sketchbook and drawing development; paper sculpture installation; mono printing, Lino printing, basic screen printing, fabric design and paint/print; acrylic and watercolour painting, cyanotypes, fanzines and presentation of work.

We hope to be able to have an exhibition of the work produced by participants at Beach Creative when restrictions are lifted.

Currently being delivered via Zoom

Fortnightly on Tuesday's from 2pm-4pm

A free course aimed at those who face mental health difficulties and isolation- to attend please contact

About Take Off:

Take Off provides ready-made social networks and also provide other peer support services as needed. When a need is identified, we will endeavour to design, develop and deliver a service to fill that void. We have a large group of sessional workers spread across East Kent. We believe peer support is a significant part of our recovery process and therefore has an economic value.
