About the event
This exhibition runs in parallel with the open exhibition ‘Spirit of Amy’ in Duchamp gallery, celebrating the town’s connection to this iconic pioneer of flight and a decade of the bronze.
Ten years ago, in September 2016, Herne Bay welcomed HRH Prince Michael of Kent to unveil a bronze statue of record-breaking pilot Amy Johnson, marking the 75th anniversary of her death - in service for the RAF during WWII - off the shores of the town in 1941. This exhibition opens a window into the process behind the creation of the statue, giving the viewer a fascinating glimpse into the thoughts of the artist, Stephen Melton, whose vision was brought to life, and the creation process of casting to bronze at Meltdowns in Ramsgate. The show uses a mixed media of photographs, text and sketches to give the viewer an insight into the ‘Making of a Monument’.
